College: In-state vs Out

Obviously, college is extremely expensive and stressful. Going to college in Utah is a good solution to those problems - however, missed opportunities are inevitable. When it comes to choosing a college, the question arises whether or not to stay in state.

5 Reasons to Stay In-State:
1. In-State Tuition: This poses a big advantage, especially since Utah has the program “Utah Scholars” (which helps out students who wish to stay in state).

2. Family and friends: Planning to go to college in-state is smart for people who get homesick easily. There are multiple cases where students have dropped their school because it is too far away. This is also easy on the family members of the students.

3. Save money on travel expenses: This one is pretty obvious. If a student stays in states the traveling expenses of seeing their family are pretty low. That means that they can visit more often. With Mom and Dad only an hour away, it makes it pretty easy to visit on holidays and long weekends.

4. Student acceptance: Often times students who have lived in the same place where they are going to school have an easier time getting accepted by other students. Plus, everyone likes a free tour guide.

5. Living Expenses: Students can live at home! Although this may not be ideal for most students, it is definitely a choice worth considering. Students who live at home can save an average of $10,000.

5 Reasons to Leave:
1. Independence: Students who go to school out-of-state tend to be much more independent. Going to school out-of-state forces the student to explore their new home and meet all of the new people around them. Independence is a super important part of growing up.

2. Meeting new people: Obviously, high school friends and family may not be around anymore. Going to college outside of state is a great way to create new life-long friends that might be considered a second family. Also, summer and breaks still allow the student to go home and visit their old friends and family.

3. A new environment: Sometimes, students choose to attend schools that are at a completely different elevation and have a completely different climate. It may take a little while to adjust, but there are many benefits that come with the change. Learning to do a variety of sports and school activities is a good way to explore and adapt to a new place.

4. Opportunities: A student is bound to be exposed to great things after they leave behind their home. Depending on whatever path they choose to take, there could potentially be a life-changing opportunity for the student to take.

5. Choice: Leaving the state is great because there are so many more colleges to choose from. Rather than choosing from only a couple, (Utah) the student can choose from colleges all over the country. Depending on whether they want to go to a top college or a private school, the choice is theirs.

In conclusion, the choice where to go to college is up to the student, however, some benefits might persuade a student one way or another. Hopefully these tips gave some insight. There are benefits to staying in state or going out but mostly depends on the student and what they want.

Dance Moms Departure

In the newest Dance Moms episode, which aired on April 12, the Zieglers finally announced they will not be returning to Dance Moms after season six. Maddie Ziegler, her younger sister Mackenzie Ziegler, and their mom Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni have been on the TV show since the debut in 2011. The Zieglers made many memories at the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC), so it was very hard for Abby Lee Miller, the other moms, the Zieglers’ teammates, and their fans to say goodbye.

The Zieglers have consistently been Abby Lee Miller’s favorites since season one. So, when Melissa told Abby they were leaving her dance company, Abby was heartbroken. She started crying and gave a small speech about how proud she is of Maddie and Mackenzie. The other moms were very sad about the Zieglers leaving too, because they’re all very good friends with Melissa and care about her kids.

The Zieglers leaving Dance Moms will have a huge impact on the show. Many fans are very upset about this news and say that they will stop watching the show because the Zieglers are gone. Other fans are supporting Maddie and Mackenzie, whether they’re on the show or not.

The rumors of the Zieglers leaving surfaced when many gossip blogs/magazines wrote articles about it even before Melissa announced the news. In the episodes leading up to Melissa’s announcement, the other dance moms constantly asked Melissa questions about the rumor, but she never answered the questions and only said, “My daughters are never leaving the ALDC.” Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni lied to Abby Lee, the other moms, and her fans.

The Zieglers are leaving the ALDC because over the years, Maddie Ziegler has been getting many dance and acting opportunities for music videos and TV shows on Disney channel. Now, Maddie Ziegler was offered a job to do a movie produced by Sia, a famous pop singer, because she starred in multiple Sia music videos. The Zieglers accepted this job offer because they think it’s more important than going to a dance competition every week. Melissa also thinks that it’s a better idea to leave the ALDC because she’d, “rather be on a job than on a bench with negative mothers”. Although Maddie’s younger sister, Mackenzie, hasn’t gotten any job offers that have been publicized yet, she must leave the TV show too because her Dance Moms contract states that she can’t be on the show without her mom.

Maddie, Mackenzie, and Melissa Ziegler have had their ups and downs at the Abby Lee Dance Company, but their time has finally come to an end. The memories and the friends that they have made on the show will always stay with them no matter what. The Zieglers will be missed and they will go on to great careers in their future.

It’s Raining Kittens

Animals all around the world, lovable dogs and cats are either lost or abandoned and found in shelters. Shelters are overcrowded, which then leads euthanasia (putting the animal down). Many animals are abandoned, and are put down because of lack of room. Paws for Life gives animals a second chance for a better life, and gives them a great home with a loving family.

Paws for Life started when Ginny Suarez, a member of Board of Directors at the S.P.C.A. became fond of dog named Fouga, whom she was about to be put down, so Ginny took charge and brought Fouga to the Vet. She got the dog spayed, vaccinated and gave her a loving home. Since then hundreds of placements have been made, and animals have been given nice homes. All cats and dogs are spayed/neutered and are current on their shots, so they are ready to go. Paws for Life does not have a set adoption fee, but they request a donation of $150 to $200 to help pay for veterinary and kennel expenses.

“Kitten season” is the time of year when cats give birth, overflowing shelters with homeless cats. On Sunday, April 17th, Kittens were available for adoption at Barking Cat. The kitten shower gave cats a second chance for a good life, asking that for scoopable litter, wet food, kitten milk replacement formula, baby bottles, baby blankets, paper towels, Purina kitten chow, cat toys and monetary donations.

Even beyond the donations that were given on the 17th, however, Paws for Life needs caring families to help foster kittens and give them loving homes until they are old enough for adoption. Paws for Life is a great company that gives animals good homes and loving families, and everyone is encouraged to join, help donate and give love to these kittens.

RSL Plans To Build New Complex

Real Salt Lake (RSL) is the professional soccer team of Salt Lake City. At the moment, RSL has an academy located in Arizona for young players striving to one day play professional soccer. However, the organization recently released their plans for a new training complex and high school that will be located in Herriman, Utah. The complex will include eight soccer fields in addition to the high school. Three of the eight fields will be turf, with two of them located indoors. The released plan will cost at least fifty million dollars.

The RSL owner has a very clear vision for the new development. He hopes to build a program that will give talented youth soccer players as much opportunity for a successful athletic career as they would have in Europe. In addition, the idea is that both RSL and the Real Monarchs (RSL’s minor league team) will be able to utilize the fields for their training sessions. The owner also stated that the organization hopes to develop a professional women’s soccer team in the future, as well as continue to expand their youth program.

In addition to the many fields, there will be a STEM charter high school on the property. The high school will only be open to 250 students. Although details have not been released about who will be invited to attend the school, qualified people are imagining the school will house talented soccer players who will be enrolled via tryout.

According to KSL, the complex is scheduled to open in July 2017.

Zootopia Movie Review

Zootopia is a film directed toward children, but can appeal to any age group. Even though the movie is animated and/or seems corny to some viewers, it will have you at the edge of your seat, laughing hysterically, and adoring the characters throughout the entire movie. It has a bit of every genre; romance, humor, and action altogether.

Zootopia is a new Disney movie about a bunny named Judy Hopps who wants to become a police officer, but she soon realizes how hard it is to enforce the law. She is underestimated, and wants to prove she is meant to be a police officer she is given the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. During her mission she runs into a sly fox named Nick Wilde, who gives her a lead on her case. At first, Nick and Judy have a rocky friendship, but as the movie builds, so does their relationship. While solving the mystery they encounter many scary and funny situations that will keep you entertained trough the entire film.
The movie has many lessons that are important for kids to learn at a young age. Zootopia deals with, segregation, racism, empowerment, and bullying. Racism is involved because the animals in Zootopia are separated between predators and prey. Empowerment is hugely involved since the movie is about how the other animals bully and look down upon Judy because she’s a prey. But, Judy is persistent and proves everyone wrong. She shows that no matter what gender or how small you are, you can do anything you want to. It’s valuable for kids to learn about these issues because they will carry these morals with them throughout their entire lives. The morals are somewhat complex for kids, but are displayed simply.

I personally enjoyed the movie, each character had their own qualities and likable personalities. The story had morals that relate to society today and stereotyping people, so all types of people can relate to the story. The movie got a 8.4 out of 10 stars but in my opinion I would rate it a 10 out of 10. The story had a fun, empowering, exciting, airy spirit that was very enjoyable to watch. I would recommend this movie to all different age groups.

Why Sage?

By Caroline H. and Mackenna

There are two end-of-year tests that students take: Galileo and Sage. Galileo is a district test, and Sage is a state test. Students are allowed to opt out of taking the Sage test, but Galileo isn’t an option, because while Sage scores are used to reflect on the teachers, the Galileo scores are more for the students (and parents) to see how they are learning. Even though Sage is optional, almost all the kids take it anyway just 'for the heck of it'. Galileo could easily be used for everything, so we don’t have to spend six weeks straight testing. So, why do we need to do Sage in the first place? Can’t Galileo scores just reflect on the teachers?

Galileo is a test that is used throughout the school year to make sure students are learning. There is a test at the beginning of the year, the middle of the year, and the end of the year. Galileo is important, however, the amount of testing toward the end of the year can be really stressful. With Sage beginning the week after Galileo ends, the end of the school year isn’t as fun as it should be. Typically schools only take one EOY (end-of-year) test for each core subject, but the Park City School District requires two to four EOY tests for each subject unless you opt out. Galileo doesn’t need to be taken three times a year, and on top of it, we don’t need a whole other test to deal with. It is understandable why Galileo is taken, but since Sage is just to reflect on the teachers, Galileo is perfectly capable of being used for that.

Students are allowed to opt out of Sage because it is “completely pointless”, as some kids would say. Sage is not really helpful for the students in any way, it just helps the state see how well the teachers are doing their jobs. Unlike Galileo, Sage is only once a year, at the end of the year, but it is still just as torturous. When students know that the test won’t benefit them in any way, and that it’s just used for the teachers, they are less motivated to do well. If kids are allowed to opt out, why does anyone have to do it in the first place? The only reason kids take Sage is because their parents don’t want to teach them that you can just quit something because you don’t want to do it. The purpose of Sage is to see how good the teacher is, but can’t Galileo tell them the same thing?

Maybe you’ve heard your teachers say, “Oh, don’t worry, this won’t count on your grade.” or, “This test won’t affect anything, it only helps the teachers get better.” This may or may not be a lie. In the past, even after teachers have said stuff like that, Galileo and Sage testing have affected class placement for the following year. For example, this year, the MOY (middle-of-year) Galileo test affected whether you got into 9th grade Honors English or not. Also, Sage scores have affected whether you get a letter that allows you to take a test to get into an advanced math class. Sure, test scores are important to determine how much you’ve learned throughout the year, but it shouldn’t be used to determine whether or not a student should be in a certain class. If there is going to be a test to get into a class, there should be a separate test that must be take specific to that class. Also, students should know how their test scores will be used.

Spring Sports

The ski season is over, so it’s time to find a new sport for the spring. There are many options such as golf, and mountain biking. If you’re on a team, soccer, lacrosse, and football are other great options to chose from. Even if you’re really committed to that one winter sport, condition for it while you can’t do it. Don’t stay cooped up in your bedroom just because ski season is over, try a new spring sport! This will keep you active and give you something to do while you’re waiting for ski season to start again in the fall.

Since the weather is getting warmer and the snow is melting fast, the green grass of the golf course is being revealed. Not only are golf courses opening, bike trails/running trails are dry enough to use. Golfing and mountain biking are great things to do in your free time, especially when you live in Park City, Utah. Almost every trail or course you go to will have exquisite views of the mountains surrounding it. So, while the climate is perfect in the spring, not too hot, not too cold, get outside and try something new.

If you enjoy a team sport, many seasons begin right when the resorts close so try it out because most teams could use more players; experienced, or not. Soccer, lacrosse, and football are all sports that can be picked up in no time. All the teams have flexible practicing schedules and are a very fun way to stay active. An extra sport isn’t a huge commitment because you can go when you want and it is not super expensive. There are so many options when it comes to a spring sport, There's sure to be something you’ll like.

You might be super committed to your winter sport and you don’t want to join another team. One thing you can do is conditioning. Rather than trying to play and focus on another sport, you can continue to focus on the one you’ve already been doing. During the spring and summer there are lots of places you can go to train, like the park, any athletic fields, or the Center of Excellence. You can also sign up for classes to keep you fit, like a cycling class or boot camp. Additionally, there are many camps outside of town that will be in a place where there is still snow and you can train there.

So whether you want to make good use of the dry trails opening up, pick up a new sport to play, or just condition for the winter sport you’re really committed to, spring is a great time to do that. Any of those would keep you ready and fit for the new upcoming ski season. Stick with it, and your performance can greatly increase because of the athleticism you have that your teammates don’t. Find a trail, sign up for a sport, or go to a park this spring while you’re still mourning over the fact that ski season is over. Just because you can’t do your winter sport anymore, doesn’t mean you should just forget about it and stop training. You don’t always need snow to train.

What You Need To Know About Weed

In today's society marijuana is becoming a very easy to get and a common drug among teens and adults. Many states have legalized cannabis for medical and some states have legalized it for recreational use. For some adults, weed is common thing that just comes with growing up, but what does it actually do to your brain as it is developing? A study from Muir Wood, a teen treatment center, says that abuse of this drug can lead to reduced cognitive function and quality of white matter. Later in the study they state that lost of use of marijuana in your teen years can lead to anxiety and depression in later years. Weed can lead to more dangerous drugs later in life because teens think, "if this drug isn't harmful, then I will try harder drugs".

Cannabis for adults is less harmful but can still have negative effects like more risk of colds and depression. There is no proven data that states weed leads to death or cancer.

While some people think weed is a bad drug, others say that there are many benefits of smoking weed. Weed is legal in four states for recreational use. These states include Colorado, Alaska, Oregon and Washington. Twenty-Three states have legalized it for medical use.

There is such a negative background with weed, but in reality it is not the worst drug in the world. Unlike most other drugs, no one has ever died from it. There have been negative effects with the drug as listed above, but none that are fatal.

3 Extra Days to Pay Taxes This Year

Taxes. April 18th. Gidder dun. There. Done. ‘Nuff said. Alright, not many of you might know or care that taxes are almost always on April 15th. However, this year, that isn’t true. This is because April 15th 2016 lands on a holiday in Washington D.C. Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is when Washington D.C. celebrates the freeing of all slaves. ‘Tax Day’ also lands on a Friday, and according to logic, you can’t schedule the due date for taxes on a weekend. In Massachusetts and Maine, they get another day to procrastinate because April 18th is Patriot’s Day. This is a day to mark the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Many of you might be thinking, “Okay, this nerdy 13 year old just wasted my time with pointless information about taxes. Taxes of all things! So what.” Well, think again! Anyone who has a job has to pay taxes! This actually accounts for 1 in 4 high school students! A fellow journalist had to fill out paperwork for taxes, and he will be paying taxes next year. Whether or not you just wasted your time reading this, or are frantically scrambling around to get your taxes all filed together, have a good tax season!

Swimsuit Spending

Although American Eagle at the Tanger Outlets and Urban Outfitters in California don’t seem like they’d have much in common, they share one common characteristic; they each charge outrageous amounts of money for swimsuits. While swimsuit shopping for the upcoming Utah Spring break, it was noted that swimsuit prices have skyrocketed. In order to buy the full swimsuit you have to purchase both the top and bottoms, and most cost about 40 dollars each! Most consumers find themselves asking the question, “But why do they cost so much? Swimsuits are covering less of someone’s body than regular clothes, and are made of cheap latex?” The answer might be more complicated than some would think.

Swimsuit prices are due to fit and material. Swimsuits also give a person confidence. So it’s important that they fit right. They have to hide certain places while showing others and make a woman feel good about her body. They also need to fit right so they don’t fall off when in the rough waves of the ocean. Another problem is since suits are such a smaller canvas to work with, they’re harder to make perfect. Spandex, which is very expensive, slippery and stretchy, requires a special sewing machine to stitch them. Swimsuits are in high demand so people are willing to pay a lot to get them. Since some places are only warm in the summer, swimsuit demand goes up very rapidly when it gets warm. The issue of why companies started selling bikini tops and bottoms separately is simple; some people have larger thighs and gluts than chests or vice versa.

Overall, there are many factors that go into a swimsuit that make it cost so much, so while cringing at the price tag of that new Victoria’s Secret swimsuit, remember all the effort that goes into creating a it.

Ocean Acidification: Global Warming's Evil Twin

A Global Carbon Footprint
Because of the industrial revolution in the world since the 1800s, daily emissions of greenhouse gases have risen to incredible numbers. The most common and prominent of these gases is carbon dioxide (or CO2). The revolution has resulted in roughly 40 billion tons of CO2 released into the air every year. Half of this outflow is absorbed by the ocean, causing drastic alterations in the water chemistry, which, in turn, affects aquatic life cycles - especially in animals that are lower in the food chain.

For billions of years, Earth's oceans have maintained a healthy, stable balance of acid in the water. This level is roughly 8.1 on the pH scale, and sustainable for all marine life. In recent years, however, studies show that this number is being changed, causing a drop in pH - and a rise in acidity. This acidification of the ocean, if it continues, can have devastating consequences on a global scale.

Devastating Effects on Humans
Before recent studies, there was no proof that the ocean was taking any damage from humanity's total carbon footprint, and was continued to be treated as a storehouse for the abundance of CO2. But recent studies have shown that the oceans can't simply dispose of CO2, and these alarming amounts of carbonic acid in the water are destroying natural habitats. The increase in acidity has been proven to affect hard shell organisms (such as corals, lobster, shrimp, and planktonic organisms) and cause birth defects in fish.

Over one billion people rely on marine life for daily protein, in the form of things like fish, lobster and shrimp. 29 million tons of fish a year are for human consumption. Planktonic organisms - specifically, phytoplankton - produce between 50 and 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. 90% of marine life is directly or indirectly dependent on the coral reefs that are being overfished, mined, polluted, and destroyed. The entire oceanic food chain, which includes humans, is delicate, and the removal of even one of these variables could be disastrous.

Fighting For Our Oceans

A team of activists, including photographer Shawn Heinrichs, photojournalist Paul Hilton, and race car driver Leilani Munter, have stepped up to travel the world filming a movie to bring attention to the possibility of a sixth mass extinction. Their movie, titled Racing Extinction, was filmed in countless oceans and third-world areas, teaching others how to step up and save their oceans. The team even projected photos and clips of endangered species on the Empire State Building, in Wall Street, on the Vatican in Rome, St. Peter's Basilica, and dozens of other places.

Penguins on the Vatican in Rome
St. Peter's Basilica
The same team has also launched an interactive website where viewers can learn anything, from simple ways to reduce their daily emissions to how to petition petition for the protection of endangered species.

But the activists of Racing Extinction aren't alone. The Case Foundation, The Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment, and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation are all proud and active supporters. During his speech at the Oscars, Leonardo DiCaprio thanked his supporters, and then used his time to talk about the environment. "Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is a most urgent threat, facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters and the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity [...]."

Peace, Love, and Little Donuts

A new shop named Peace, Love and Little Donuts opened up just last Thursday on Main Street. Peace, Love, and Little Donuts is a 1970’s themed donut shop that serves up mini donuts and smiles. Lange Palmer (the owner) first decided to open in Park City, because there wasn't another true donut shop around. As someone who had been unable to find donuts in town when visiting, he saw it as an opportunity to fill a void. Though another shop (Twice the Dough) also opened recently, he said there was room for more than one donut shop in town. He expects locals and tourists alike to embrace both shops.

Peace, Love and Little Donuts has a variety of offerings, comprising three menu categories. "Groovies" are topped with simple sugars, like honey glaze, Saigon cinnamon and maple sugar. "Far Outs" come frosted, with flavors ranging from vanilla to lemon. "Funkadelics", the biggest sellers, venture into the world of artisan pastries and feature toppings such as maple bacon, Boston cream pie, raspberry french toast and salted chocolate. These groovy donut minis are taking Park City by storm!

Our Experience:

9.8 stars! These donuts are absolutely adorable and delicious! We ordered the flavors Chocolate-Pretzel, "Razzle Dazzle," Lemon, "Dirt" (chocolate, Oreos and gummy worms) and Raspberry French Toast. The flavors are unique, and the donuts are made in front of the customer, so they’re warm. The topping options are vast and the prices are very reasonable. If there were any complaints, we would say the donuts were a little too small, but that didn’t take away from the flavor! Plus, this store’s hours are flexible, unlike Twice the Dough who are only opened until 2. This store is a must visit and by far some of the best donuts in Park City!

Pop-up Pantry Update

As many readers know, the Pop-up Pantry is a very popular topic here at TMJH. The Pop-up Pantry is having a lot of success. Enough so that Ms. Hooker requested that yours truly extend an invitation to the elementary school next door, McPolin Elementary School. However, with all of the success that comes with the Pop-up Pantry, there also comes the need for more supplies. So please donate as much as possible. Shampoo, conditioner, snacks (without nuts), sports drinks, and women's’ deodorant are mostly what we are running low on. Also, please take whatever you need in room 16. Remember, "Take what you need, not what you want." That is all we have for today as far as the Pop-up Pantry, and we will be back with you soon.

TEDx Youth In Park City

Students have been creating TEDx Talks for a few weeks now, but have not had the chance to present them. For those who would like to share their talk, TEDx Youth is coming to Park City’s Eccles Center. There are auditions on April 18th and 19th, but not everyone will get in. If you get picked to participate in TEDx Youth, the actual date of the event is May 4th. You can either present your talk or leave school (with teacher’s permission) on a white day to support the people who are speaking. You have to buy tickets to attend. TEDx is coming up soon so make sure to edit your speeches and buy your tickets.

A Memorial to Prince

Legend. Icon. Star. All these words embodied Prince. Without a doubt, Prince changed the way people saw the world. From the first time, he stepped on stage, fashion and music were never the same.
Born in 1958, Prince Rogers Nelson grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both of his parents were performers, in fact his father went by the same stage name Prince. He obviously wasn't as successful.
Prince's first and second albums gained him popularity, but it was his third album that struck a yearned for gold. Controversy struck the public, every song was called “scandalous” and “racey.” That’s exactly what people wanted in the 80’s and 90’s.
Yet, his most famous album by far is Purple Rain. Songs like When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy were so popular that they actually landed Prince his own movie. No one was surprised when they called it Purple Rain. It started Prince and his band The Revolution, the film showcased their experiences that lead them to where they were. The movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
Finally, someone could not write a memorial about Prince without talking about his fiery fashion and his infamous stage presence. Most would agree that Prince's signature style was a ruffled blouse with a tailored jacket and pants (usually those where sparkly), but that fearless style has influenced some of the most well-known stylists in the world. His daring garments inspired designers like Gucci to put tight-fit suits on the runway.
One of the many reasons the audience loved Prince is due to his energetic performances. He had a flamboyant energy that made the crowd move in excitement. Some might even say he was sassy. Many of his forever fans say that his Super Bowl Halftime show in 2007 was the best one.
Prince was not only an amazing singer, songwriter, and actor, he was an advocate for animals too. He changed people's lives and to him, that was the most important thing. He will live on forever in the hearts of every fan. R.I.P Prince.

Results Of The Miner Film Festival

On April fifteenth, the annual Miner Film festival was held at the Eccles Center. Students at the high school worked on their films for months, for this special day. All of their films were shown, and there were many people who won awards. Some of these awards included, best picture, best cinematography, best performance, best sound design, best writing, and the Sundance Passion Award. Here are the results.

The best picture award went to the film Distinction, by Cameron Thuman, and Gregory Foltynowicz. From watching the film, it had such a great meaning, and passion, I am glad that they won. The best Cinematography award went to the film Creativity Is Life by Gregory Foltynowicz. It was very creative and very philosophical. The best performance went to the film Despondent by Aubrie Walker. Again, a very meaningful story. The best sound design went to the film Getting By by Bennett Barbosa. A great story with a great message. Best writing also went to the film Despondent. And lastly, the Sundance Passion Award went to the film Lucid, by Mia Moyano. Lucid was a great film, that was very fun, with beautiful dancing.

Overall, the Miner Film festival was very successful, and a fun way to share the students passion of films. All the films were very well done, and were very entertaining to watch. I can’t wait to attend next year and see more great films.

The Top 5 Ways To Stop Procrastination

Now and then, we all feel tired and don’t want to do what we should be doing. As a result of this, we don’t do our work, causing us to get stressed out. Examples of procrastination include, saving work to the last minute, doing something unproductive when we should be doing our work, or the common one, coming up with excuses why we couldn’t or didn’t do it. Procrastination is one of the worst habits you can get yourself into. It leads to being very stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy. With that said, here are the top 5 ways to stop procrastinating.

The number one way to stop procrastinating, is to make a list of everything you have to do. This will help you stay organized, as well as teach you some time management skills. If you see a list, it might motivate you to work, so you can cross things off, and relax. A list will make it easier for you to see what you should do first and last, based on most importance, to least importance. Lists are a good idea.

The second way to stop procrastinating, is to put away all distracting things. The most common things include, phones, remotes, computers, and ipods. These things take your attention away from your work, with text messages, games, emails, notifications, TV shows, music and movies. It really isn’t a good idea to have any electronics out doing any kind of work. Putting away these things will help you stay focused, therefore helping you to get your work done.

The third way to stop procrastinating, is to ask someone to help or join you while you do your work. If you have a parent or friend sitting by you, they can help you with any questions you have, or just help you stay focused. The best thing to do, is to have a friend working on the same thing as you, so you both can get the work done, and help each other. Make sure you do not conversate unimportant things with them, or both of you will get distracted. Stay on task until you are finished.

The fourth way to stop procrastinating, is to think of the consequences if you do not get your homework done. You can motivate yourself to do work doing this. Your parents or co-workers, could be mad at you, you could lose trust from your employees, you would be stressed out, and be falling behind. Thinking of these things could help you realize that this is important and it could affect your life majorly. Doing your work is important.

The fifth and final way to stop procrastinating, is to set goals for yourself. Setting goals will help you feel more willing to do your work. This will help you feel satisfaction in doing your work, to achieve your goals. Some good goals to include, are doing your work right when you get home from school, and to pay attention in your least favorite subject. This will help you greatly.

If you take all these steps, it will help you to stay focused, help achieve your goals, and manage your life, and time. Your life will be so much better, with less worries and arguments.

Everyone Poops, But It Shouldn't Be In The School Bathroom!

The girl’s bathroom in Treasure Mountain looks like a murder scene and it smells worse than a dump. Girls are much grosser than guys think we are. There are numerous things that we can do to make our bathrooms more sanitary.

Girls need to stop dumping their feminine products in the toilet and leaving their "mess" everywhere. The stalls do have little metal boxes for teen girls to put their feminine products in. Some students don’t use the boxes and drop their used products into the toilet. That’s incredibly unsanitary, it leaves
the stall looking like someone was killed in it and it smells so bad that no one would ever want to use that stall. Every girl knows that feminine products do not go down the toilet. Words cannot express how disgusting it is if someone leaves their tampon in the toilet and not flush. The girls at Treasure need to learn how to keep a bathroom clean.

Some of the girls poop in the bathroom, which leads to a smelly bathroom and hallway. If you want to poop in our bathrooms you must double flush or triple flush; it eliminates the pungent smell. Who would want to poop in a public place anyway? It’s embarrassingly smelly and the girls around you can hear that you’re pooping. There is always poop stuck to the inside of the toilet and no one does anything about it, when that happens no one uses that stall and it never gets cleaned. Even if you go to that exact same stall it will still have blood and poop still on it. Treasure Mountain needs to clean the girls bathroom. Contrary to belief the girls make a bigger mess than the boys.

The custodians clean the bathroom every day after school. Ms. Hooker has seen them go into the bathrooms to clean, but somehow they are still gross in the morning. Because of after school programs the bathrooms are left as a disgusting. After school programs need to either clean up their mess or have the janitors clean up after their crap, literally!

Gossip Girls

When asked if they have ever called someone a sl*t, or another rude name, ten out of ten girls said they have. Girls constantly talk about other girls behind their back because they feel threatened and talking smack makes them feel better about themselves. According to Business Insider, “Since girls are more likely to be trained to elaborate and include their feelings in their memory-making, they're more likely to remember better.” This also causes girls to hold grudges longer. Another reason girls call other girls derogatory names is because they are jealous of them and don’t have confidence about themselves.

This is a giant problem and it is one of the largest forms of bullying at Treasure Mountain and all across the United States. Girls should be encouraged to be confident about who they are and confident about their decisions and body. Obviously, they shouldn’t do anything too drastic or inappropriate, but they also shouldn't be defined for one bad decision they have made in their life.

As the famous quote from Mean Girls depicts this issue, “You all need to stop calling each other sl*ts and wh*res. That just makes it okay for guys to call you that.” And it’s true. The other problem with this is the fact that guys are continuously pressuring girls into doing things they don’t feel comfortable with or don’t want to do at this age. Then, whether or not they do or don’t do what the guys want, the boys call them rude names in the halls and make them feel bad about themselves. It’s a lose-lose situation; if guys pressure a girl into doing something, the girls have to live with the guilt and risk being called a sl*t. If they don’t do what the guy wants, girls have the risk of being called either a prude or still a sl*t (which, honestly, is so confusing considering those words are polar opposites).

The problem with guys starts with girls. Like Cady Heron said in Mean Girls, girls calling each other mean names just makes it okay for guys to do it too. The problems starts with girls, so stop calling each other that! If we all work together as the beautiful people we are, we can put a stop to this for good.

Miracles from Heaven

Miracles from Heaven is a Christian story about a girl named Anna, who has pseudo-construction motility disorder, which is an incurable disorder that leaves her unable to digest food. As her family searches for a way to help Anna, they find themselves visiting Dr. Nurko in Boston. Even though the future does not look bright for Anna, when she experiences a traumatic fall into a tree and hits her head, she does not die; instead, she gets cured of her disorder. Later, Anna explained to her parents that while she was in the tree and was unconscious, she went to Heaven and met God.

Miracles From Heaven is an unexpectedly effective tear-jerker [...].” says writer Ken Jaworowsk, from the New York Times. The new film has collected 101 million dollars worldwide while they filmed on a 12 million dollar budget. The movie was very Christian based, however, the story was very cute and was appealing to everyone. The movie has received 47% on rotten tomatoes, 44% on Metacritic, and 6.5/10 on IMDb. Surprisingly the movie is based on a true story about the Beam family and the movie incorporates clips of the family towards the end. “In comparison to previous, heavy-handed faith-based stories, this one gives us a child we can root for, a family we can support, and a stout performance by a steadfast leading lady,” says Sean O'Connell, a Cinemablend writer.

Miner Film Festival TONIGHT!

Today, on April fourteenth is the annual Miner Film Festival. Students from Park City High School, have been putting their films together for months now, and tonight they get screened. It starts at 7:00 pm at the Eccles Center.

My brother, Gregory Foltynowicz, helped with five films, and created one of his own. When interviewing him he said, "It took a lot of work. It took 4 months to put Distinction together. First, I wrote a screenplay, and then I got feedback from multiple sources. I cleaned it up at least 5 more times before we had the final screenplay. We then started creating shot lists for every scene, and planned where to film by going location scouting. After finding an area, we contacted people who owned the property and let them sign a location release. We also made our actors and actresses sign a talent release so everything we shot of them belongs to us. We filmed using a Sony DSLR that shoots in 4k. We used a crane, slider, and a glide cam. Also, we used Zoom H4N attached to the boom mic for audio. After everything was filmed, I spent weeks editing in final cut X, day and night, first starting with clips, audio, color correction, and then grading using color finale and osiris luts. When all of that was cleaned up, we reviewed and tweaked.” Greg’s film group tried really hard to make everything perfect for this special event.

As you can see, the Miner Film Festival took a lot of work, and I think that everyone should go see it, because there are some great films and awards, for hardworking high school students.

No Meet & Greets? Is This a Cheat?

The Justin Bieber Purpose Tour has been all the rage. Fans are excited, and Bieber is putting on a "once in a lifetime" show. However, after Bieber’s latest decisions, he might’ve turned the tour from all the rage to utterly rage-inducing.

On March 22, the Canadian superstar posted a picture on Instagram of him hugging a young fan... with a caption stating that he is canceling all of his remaining meet and greets from the tour. The caption said, "Want to make people smile and happy but not at my expense and I always leave feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted to the point of depression." However, while Bieber might think he’s doing the best thing for himself, this is not acceptable for his fan base.

Justin Bieber’s fans paid $1,000-$2,000 for a combination package, to buy front row seats and to meet Justin before the show. Fans who purchased this package can get a full refund and get all of their money back, but they lose their seats in the process, which discourages anyone from taking this option; there's option to just get the same seats for a fair price now that the "bonus" that came with them is gone. Since the cancellation was so random, the fans that want a refund have to frantically find decent seats to get any tickets at all, and it’s so late in the tour that most of these fans will only get seats in the back. Going from the VIP section to the nosebleed section isn’t the desired situation for Beliebers. People can keep the tickets and not get any refund if they want to keep their seats, but they won’t meet Justin, and that was the entire purpose of paying thousands for the concert package; now, they’re either paying an outrageous price only for the seats or not getting good seats at all!

For the past years, Justin and his team have been trying hard to rebuild his image and create an impressive album. Bieber’s reputation was renovated and his fanbase expanded, but fans are getting angry about this news. Some fans are getting an impression that Justin is selfish and he’s just trying to get more money by doing less. They’ve been saying that Bieber is "robbing" them or "stealing" their money.

The cancellation of meet and greets is quite frustrating for fans, because they paid for such a huge amount of money. The refund rules are not sitting too well with fans, nor with Justin's reputation. Justin Bieber had better put on an amazing show, because the way this situation is being handled, his most devoted fans are only getting half of the package they actually bought.

The "Great" Quake

The ground is rumbling and everything around people is falling down. People are screaming and panic would is spreading all throughout the town.

When the 7.0 earthquake hits, that's exactly what it'll be like.

A 7.0 earthquake is overdue in Utah and is predicted to hit within the next 50 years. The earthquake will hit the Wasatch front, which is one of the largest fault lines, and then spread, causing other earthquakes throughout Utah. In total, 80% or more of Utah will be affected by this earthquake. On the fault line, the crust has been stretching out by 1.2 millimeters every year. The last 7.0 earthquake that happened in Utah was 1,300 years ago, and on average, a 7.0 earthquake happens every 1,300 years.

The injuries and deaths that this earthquake will cause are huge. If the earthquake hits at night, then there will be an estimated 3,000 deaths and 42,000 injuries. If it hits during the day the deaths will be reduced by 20% and the injuries by 26%. This is because, during the day, people are working in buildings that are checked by the state, therefore making them better equipped to withstand earthquakes. An estimated 60,000 people will be in shelters because their homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. With all of the injuries, hospitals will be overwhelmed and won’t have enough staff to help out.

One third of buildings would be destroyed, causing a loss of 35 billion dollars. Power outages, water lines, and cell phone towers will all be down. It will take power companies 12 hours to restore a town which means that some people might be out of power for up to 30 days (including power line repairs). The earthquake will also cause fires to spread across Utah, which will cause even more damage, and there will be aftershocks everywhere. Firefighters will be in high demand, putting out fires and rescuing people from the rubble, so it could take days to get to some people - there won't be enough firefighters to save everyone simultaneously. Because of that, it's important that people help out their neighbors.

All in all, this earthquake can cause a lot of damage. Still, there are ways that a person can prepare. For example, it is recommended to have a 72-hour kit that includes water, food and other necessities. By having these things, it is guaranteed that a person will be better prepared and can last longer. It is also important to help out other people in the community.

HOA - Violating our Rights?

Homeowners Associations (HOA) have been around for as long as most can remember in neighborhoods all across America. They’re very important for many reasons: making sure people don’t block others' views, cleaning the neighborhood, and making sure the neighborhoods all have continuity. However, along with keeping the neighborhood together, they sometimes end up violating people’s First Amendment right to expression. For example, the HOA controls a house’s color, height, yard, garage, deck, style, and pretty much anything else that has to do with a home. Although these rules are important, are they really fair to homeowners? It seems like the HOA had more say in a home than the actual owner.

Of course there are reasons why the HOA is vital to a community. There can’t be one person painting their house bright pink, and another with a roof so tall it blocks everyone’s views. But, if someone does decide to paint their house pink... well, what can the Homeowners Association even do? According to Mrs. Damon, who is an active member of her HOA, “The Association can fine a person if they do not comply with the rules. They will get a couple warnings, and then, if they still do not meet the criteria, they will be cited. Really, though, besides that, we can’t force someone to change their house.”

Although Homeowners Associations are important, are they violating too many rights? In the Bill of Rights, it clearly states in the First Amendment that people have the right to expression. Well, what expresses someone’s personality more than their home, the place they at which spend their time and live, the place that represents who they are and is filled with things that are important to them? It might seem dangerous to go without the Association, though, and to risk a neighborhood colored like a mismatched rainbow. It seems like there would definitely be a downside to not having an HOA. Even so, in reality, England and many other countries don’t have one and just look at the comparison between London’s neighborhoods and some of the United States’.

Do the benefits outweigh the negative aspects of having an HOA, or is it truly the other way around?

Vail On Main

Recently, Vail Resorts announced that its retail division will be opening The North Face retail store at 515 Main Street, where the restaurant Talisker on Main used to be; according to the press release, they now have a long-term lease agreement on the space. The North Face sells activewear and outdoor sports gear, which is perfect for Park City’s active community. Alison Butz, executive director of the Historic Park City Alliance, says, “It does fit the Park City community. The North Face hits the outdoor, adventure-type marketplace, so that's a good thing.” Kelly Ladyga, a spokeswoman for Vail Resorts, says,  “The North Face also has a special connection to Park City as it is home to several of the world-class athletes they sponsor and who inspire the design of their products.”  Vail has opened retail stores in other towns where it owns and operates ski resorts, so the opening of the store in Park City didn’t surprise many. However, there are definitely some downsides to the opening.

A big concern with Vail opening large retail stores is that Main Street will lose its unique, authentic, historic district. Butz wants to make sure that Main Street continues to feel more like mountain town than a mall. “People come here and enjoy coming to Main Street because it’s not what you see everywhere else.” How will The North Face affect the local merchants? Adding large retail stores to Main will increase the rent for local merchants; local storeowners are afraid they won’t be able to keep up. Casey Crawford, the owner of Prospect, a clothing shop up the street from The North Face location, shared her worries with the Park Record. “As a community, we have to stand by who we are. Just because large stores can pay seventy-five dollars a square-foot doesn’t mean anyone else can. It’s hard to ask them ‘Hey, will you keep our rents lower, even though you can rent it out for twice as much?”

All in all, The North Face will be a good addition to Main, but only if we, as a community, are able to maintain Park City’s authenticity. Park City is a small ski town with a community that has strong tie to our history. It would be sad to see the town change too much. Since the small local shops on Main were here first, raising the rent and eventually forcing them to close would also be unfair. Locals and tourists can help by simply continuing to shop and eat at little businesses on Main Street. Kelly Ladyga tried to put some concerns to rest in saying, “Vail Resorts Retail and The North Face both look forward to working alongside our fellow commercial neighbors to support the vitality of this town and community.”

Park City's Cottontail Rabbits

In Park City, the cottontail rabbit population is the highest it’s been in five years. Research proves that these types of rabbits experience “population peaks” and “population declines” throughout five-year cycles. This shows that the numbers are so high this year because the cottontail species is reaching a population peak. Five years ago, they were rarely spotted. This year, however, the cottontail can be found jumping in front of cars more frequently than ever.

Cottontail rabbits can be identified by their unusually small size. The rabbits appear gray-brown in the summer months and white in the winter months when snow is present in order to camouflage.

Since Park City is home to many of the cottontail species’ predators, it is easy to explain the five-year cycles that the rabbits go through. The small herbivores must deal with predators such as hawks, owls, foxes, snakes, mountain lions, and more. One of the most dangerous predators to these mammals are mountain lions. When the cottontail population is at a spike, Park City’s mountain lion population has more food to prey on. This is one of the main causes of cottontail’s sharp decline every five years. The mountain lions, as well as other predators, treat the rabbits as small snacks. However, as soon as the cottontail population declines because of the increase in predation, the predator population decreases, allowing the cottontail population to spike once more, hence the five-year cycle.

Although the cottontail rabbit population is higher than ever this year, based on the five-year cycle, the population will steadily decline in the next few years. Eventually, the population will reach a low point, and then will start to increase once more.
