Incorrect Quotations

Many quotes have been created in which they are not completely correct. Whilst looking through brainyquote.com, I came across a few of these types of quotes. Here are some of the gems I found, along with a description of why they are not accurate:

  • “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” -Confucius
    • This quote does not go when applied to a swimming race. You need to stop eventually or else you’ll shrivel up from being in the pool water so long and you’ll die.

  • “Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.” -Og Mandino
    • This is true, unless you plant popcorn seeds. Those don’t harvest underground.

  • “If you can dream it, you can do it.” -Walt Disney
    • Yes, but what if your dream is cloning yourself to rule the entire universe. Would Mr. Disney really want that for the world?

  • “Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.” -Theodore Roosevelt
    • What if the night is cloudy and the stars don’t shine? What are you keeping your eyes on then?

  • “Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.” -Alfred A. Montapert
    • What if your problem is a person? DO YOU WANT TO BE A CANNIBAL?

  • “If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.” -H. G. Wells
    • True, but why couldn’t you have gotten up yesterday after you fell?

  • “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” -Helen Keller
    • Unless there is a crazy man with a chainsaw running after you. WHY WOULD YOU BE WALKING?

  • “One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.” -Euripides
    • That’s an awful lot of relatives.

Mountain Accord - Transportation Transformation

Mountain Accord is a plan to connect Salt Lake Airport, Sandy, Cottonwood Canyons, and Park City with rails, tunnels, and/or aerial tramways. Mountain Accord held an Open House meeting on February 24 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss their vision. The meeting attracted 350 concerned citizens. The meeting had to be moved from the Lecture Hall to the Eccles Center. The proposals so far seem decent, but when closer examined seem to benefit the Wasatch Front more than the Back, whose decisions are being made mainly by people outside Summit County.

The Mountain Accord plan, if carried out, will affect Park City’s transportation, environment, and economy alike. 22 representatives will vote on decision for the Blueprint on April 6, only three of them representing the Wasatch Back.

Fans of Mountain Accord argue that traffic will be reduced, making air cleaner, which is a huge issue in Salt Lake City. Mountain Accord focuses on the transportation of tourists and visitors through the Salt Lake Valley to the resorts and fails to address the possibly larger issue of commuter and residents’ traffic. The blueprints show Mountain Accord creating up to 25,000 acres of wilderness and the possible expansion of existing resorts.

Mountain Accord may make visitors who would otherwise stay in Park City hotels, eat at Park City restaurants, and put money into the Park City economy more likely to take the quick transportation from where they stay in Salt Lake City to the resorts here, becoming day visitors rather than having their “home base” for the trip in Park City.

The meeting on Tuesday was at the Eccles Center. It was open to the public and was welcome input on the blueprints from Summit County residents. Similar meetings will be held in Salt Lake County and online. After comments made at these meetings are taken into account, a finalized version of the blueprints will be created and voted on April 6. It will also be reviewed by the National Environmental Policy Act.

You can find out more about Mountain Accord at http://mountainaccord.com/ and submit ideas online by March 16.

Technology 101, Week 5

Hey everybody! I'm going to be doing something in this article that nobody has tried in the history of journalism!

That's right, plug in your earbuds and enjoy Journalism's first News Podcast.

Park City Competes Against Older Opponents at Senior Championships

From February 19th to February 21st, Park City High School Swimming and Park City Swimming qualifiers attended the 2015 Utah Senior Championships in Washington City (St. George). This meet allowed swimmers with qualifying times to compete against each other for a spot in a finals heat later that day. Each swimmer swam the events they were registered for in the morning, and, in the races that their times qualified for finals, swam again at night.

To qualify, a swimmer needed to swim a certain time in an event. Swimmers with at least one qualifying time, were allowed to sign up for that race in the meet, along with two additional bonus events. Swimmers were allowed to sign up for a total of six races, with no more than three events each day of the meet.

During the preliminary competition, many events consisted of eight or more heats of the event, making the morning session last many hours into the day. Finals didn’t last as long, for the meet only permitted there to be three heats of the top swimmers of each races.

The difficult part about Senior Championships is that most of the swimmers that attend are over fifteen-years-old. These swimmers are much faster than most of the other swimmers signed up for the same event. Since there are so many of these fast swimmers, it makes it much harder to make it back for finals.

This meet was full of tight suits, fast swimming, team bonding, and excitement. Just behind Wasatch Front, Utah Valley, and Hilltop Aquatics, Park City finished the meet in fourth place with a total score of 793 points.

5 Valentines Day Simple Treats

Valentines Day is right around the corner, but even though you might not have a valentine, you can still make these simple treats.

1. Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Chocolate Covered Strawberries are very simple to make, and a delicious treat. All you need is strawberries, melted milk/dark chocolate and (optional) white chocolate. Wash the strawberries and melt the chocolate so that it is able to be spread. Then cover the strawberry in the chocolate and let them cool. Then take the melted white chocolate and drizzle on top of the strawberry (Optional Step).

2. Heart Sugar Cookies
Make your favorite cookie dough recipe and cut the dough into heart shapes. After baking the cookies, spread red, pink, or white frosting on top and decorate with sprinkles. (This is a fun and creative activity to do with younger children.)

3. Cake Balls
Bake a cake (store bought cake mix or homemade) and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then crumble the cake into a big bowl. Soften frosting before mixing into bowl. After mixing well, scoop small balls of the mix onto a sheet and let cool. Decorate with red, white, and pink sprinkles and enjoy!

4. Brownie Bites
Bake homemade or store bought brownies. Use a small, heart shaped cookie cutter or knife and cut the brownies. (Optional) Put the brownie bites on sticks and decorate with frosting or other valentines decorations.

5. Chocolate Covered Pretzels

All you need for this simple treat is long pretzels, white chocolate, and other (optional) decorations. Lay the pretzels on wax paper. Melt the chocolate and dip the pretzel, but leave room at the bottom of the pretzel to hold it. Decorate with pink and red sprinkles and frosting.

Love is the Answer (to EVERYTHING)

I asked what I should write about today. I was met with a peaceful “Love is the answer to every question.” Here are some questions to which love is most definitely the answer.

Q: How much chocolate should I actually eat on Valentines day?
A: Love

Q: How do I get a job?
A: Love

Q: How do I get into a good college?
A: Love

Q: How do I get Ms. Gaudet to give me a hug?
A: Love

Q: What should I watch a movie about if I’m sad?
A: Love

Q: What is the meaning of life?
A: Love

Q: What should I wear on Valentine’s Day?
A: Love

Q: How do I get people to like me?
A: Love

Q: Who is Tyler Oakley?
A: Eat, SLAY, Love

Q: Love?
A: Love.

Q: Chocolate?
A: Chocolate. (This is an exception.)

Q: To be or not to be?
A: Love

Q: Shall we play a game?
A: Let’s not go there, but if you get the reference, go you!!

Q: What’s in the box?
A: Love

Q: You want the truth?
A: Well, no… I want love.

Q: Who ya gonna call?
A: Love! (Okay, that doesn’t work.)

Q: Do you ever get the feeling that there's something going on that we don't know about?
A: It’s love, Kevin. Get with it.

Q: Are you fabulous?

A: YES. (I guess we’re getting off topic here, so this is the end. Now, go answer some questions yourself!)

What to do if you don't have a Valentine on Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a day of love and happiness—for those who have a reason to celebrate it. If you happen to be one of the many women in this world who does not have a Valentine in their life, here are some ways to celebrate this holiday, without a special someone:

WHAT TO DO WITH FRIENDS:
  • have a romantic movie marathon and hate on it as a group
  • get dressed up really nice and go to a fancy dinner
  • have a spa day
  • forget “Valentine’s Day”, it’s “GALentine’s Day”
  • have a regular girls’ night in (or out, depending on your situation)
  • have a chocolate fondue party

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY FRIENDS:
  • wrap yourself in a cocoon of blankets and watch Netflix as you put yourself into a candy coma
  • buy yourself CandyGrams at school and sign them from “Your Secret Admirer” and act super surprised when they are delivered to you
  • tell everyone you have plans with your Valentine, but really go home and eat all the chocolate you want because YOU ARE AWESOME
  • veg out
  • treat yourself to mental health day away from society because you’re an unsocial introvert and you don’t need anyone to make you happy
  • blast music throughout the house and dance like you’re at a rave
  • draw, paint, CREATE
  • read, read, read, you can never go wrong with reading a book you love
  • revel in your singleness

WHAT TO DO NO MATTER WHAT (even if it’s not Valentine’s Day):

  • celebrate love itself
  • laugh at everything, just because
  • pamper yourself in self-love
  • be happy with yourself
  • stay healthy
  • DON’T WORRY because it will all be okay in the end (and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end)

Homeschooling and Public Schools; pros and cons

Approximately 1,567,732 kids in all of America are home schooled. Many people think that homeschoolers are dumb and don’t learn as much but it all depends on their parents. Kids are taught the same subjects using workbooks, online classes, home school classes and of course their parents. The social aspect of homeschooling vs. regular schooling is also very different. There are many pros and cons to homeschooling but some people prefer it more than public, charter or private school.
Homeschooler’s point of view;
Many people believe that homeschoolers don’t learn, they just go to school in pajamas and have fun.  “I love homeschooling, but sometimes it can be really boring,” says Isabel Kessler, a sixth grader who has never been to public school. But it all depends on who the teacher is. For instance, if someone's mom is their teacher, then that person might sleep in ‘till 7:00-9:00 am, then get dressed and get their computer/textbooks. If their dad is their teacher, than maybe they would wake up when they want, but it might be more strict. It all depends on what personality their parent/guardian has. The students all learn in different ways at home and that can be very helpful for children who have a learning or an attention disability. Home schooled kids are equally as smart as kids who go to school, it all depends on what you are taught and how you are taught. The social life of a homeschooler is surprising, Isabel Kessler says that people say she, “Lives under a rock”, but mostly homeschoolers have lots of classes where they can branch out, unless, they are shy, and that is where the cons come in. Isabel said “I take a pottery class, martial arts and many more activities but I am bored and lonely quite a lot.” A shy homeschooler is very lonely, think, most of your friends are friends you met in school, imagine all your friends from school gone! But if you are not shy, than homeschooling rocks!
Public School Student’s point of view;
Public school is where the majority of students in the United States attend. There is also private and charter schools but public is the most popular because there is no extra charge to the families.  Public is is wonderful because you make many friends and you learn a lot. Public schools are all very different and the amount of money coming in from the community determines how nice the school is. Another thing to gamble for when it comes to public schools, is the teachers. If students have good teachers you will learn a lot and enjoy it but if you don’t then students may hate school. A downside to public school is the time in the morning you have to wake up. A good thing is that you have a set schedule and you have something that will occupy peoples day so students don’t get bored.
There are clearly many different pros and cons for home school and public school but either one is perfectly fine. Everyone needs something a little different to be a succesful as possible and having a different learning environment can be very beneficial.

How to Dance in Ohio: A Movie Review - Emma and Sam

How to Dance in Ohio
A review by Emma and Sam

How to Dance in Ohio is an inspiring documentary that goes into the homes and workplaces of autistic teenagers and young adults as they prepare for their annual spring formal. It emphasizes that the lives of high-functioning teens and young adults on the autistic spectrum are not much different from those of any other adolescent. In the twelve weeks leading up to the dance, they learn common social and dance skills. Throughout the movie, you fall in love with three of the girls within the program: Jessica, Caroline, and Meredith, as they pick dates, dresses, and a King and Queen for dance overall.
The film started out focusing equally on both boys and girls, but in the editing process, the director made the decision to concentrate on girls. During the time leading up to the dance, the girls (and a few guys, too) face issues that anyone who has gone to a high school dance know: buying a dress, finding a date, being nervous about dancing. Along with these and some others, these autistic adolescents have other challenges to face that may be somewhat familiar to anyone but are also somewhat intensified. These include finding work as a person on the autism spectrum, socializing in general, and having a difficulty in expressing feelings.

Both Emma and Sam agree that this film was worth the ticket. It was comical and moving all in one. It gives the viewer an idea of what life is like as a person on the autistic spectrum. We would both highly recommend this film.

Microsoft's Revolutionary new Technology

Movies are sometimes a prediction of the future, although most of the time they are completely fictional. Today, one of the most fictional technologies from movies becomes real: Holograms.

Holograms are physical renderings of digital files. For example, if someone was on a vacation to Hawaii, they could show up in my living room as a hologram. They would still be in Hawaii, but thanks to holograms he could sit down on my couch in front of the TV and have a face-to-face conversation. Crazy, right?

Researchers at Microsoft have developed holograms into existence. Their "Hololens" allows users to see holograms wherever they go. Essentially, it's Google Glass with a twist.

Microsoft Hololens allows for users to see virtual images in real life. Rather than a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift, Hololens uses what the user sees and adds to it, rather than replacing it entirely.

Hololens is expected to be available sometime mid 2015. Microsoft still has to work out the bugs in order to make it truly foolproof. Consumers don't want controls that only work some of the time.

This is a big step into the future of holograms. Science fiction is becoming reality, and we are gradually improving our life as we know it.

Should Be Emojis

There are plenty of things that Apple emojis stand for but there are still plenty missing. Here is a list of some much needed emojis.

Eye Roll
Because the girl we thought represented sassiness is just a poser, there's no other way to properly express, "Puhlease!"

*Drops Mic*
Because you just said something really crucial and everyone needs to shut up for a minute and soak it all in.

Throwing Up
Because you ate something disgusting, and the throw-up emoji explains it all. Also, because your 20th friend just got engaged and the reaction is the same. Think of all the perfect ways you will use this.

Taco
Because Taco Tuesday should be all day, every day.

Batman
Because you do Batman like things all the time.

Hot Cheetos
Because you can't type properly when your fingers are covered in red dust.

Planets
Because science rules, and what other way to explain when things are outta this world?

Because hash tag "selfie" isn't cutting it these days.

Apple there are the emojis you need, so get on to adding those.

Five Last Minute Breakfast Ideas

Breakfast: The most important meal of the day. Sadly, we all have those days where we are running late, and scrambling to find something to eat. Here are some last minute breakfast ideas that take 5 minutes or less to prepare!

1. Yogurt Parfait
One easy, fast, and healthy breakfast idea is a home made yogurt parfait. All you need is yogurt (preferably vanilla greek yogurt), some of your favorite fruit or berries, and granola. Put the yogurt into a bowl and layer the berries, and granola.

2. Smoothies
Smoothies are a little more time consuming, but they are very healthy and delicious. Here are some appetizing recipes for smoothies.
•Berry Delicious- 2 cups of frozen mixed berries, one banana, one cup of milk
•Peanut Butter Banana- 2 bananas, 2 cups of milk, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1 tbsp honey, 2 cups of ice
•Kiwi Strawberry- 1 cup strawberries, 2 peeled kiwis, 2 cups ice
Blend the ingredients together and enjoy!

3. Peanut Butter and Honey Toast
All you need for this recipe is bread, peanut butter, and honey. Toast the bread (optional) and spread on the peanut butter and honey.

4. Eggo Waffles
Although Eggo waffles may not be the healthiest option, they are a fast and easy breakfast. Toast eggo waffles in a toaster, and put butter and syrup on top.

5. Granola Bar or Fruit
Another time saving option if you are about to miss your bus would be a cliff bar, or other granola bar. You could also grab a banana to go.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so instead of putting it behind you, prepare one of these fast and easy recipes instead.

Technology 101, Week 4

After raiding my armageddon stash of possible articles, I found one that would be especially useful: How not to freak out when dealing with a computer problem. Now I know it sounds crazy that this list would be useful, but you'd be surprised at how many people do this wrong. If you follow a few simple steps, you can avoid calling the IT guy, whoever that is at your office or home.

1. Reboot the computer.

The most important step of fixing any computer problem is REBOOT THE COMPUTER! Most people complain to the smart people in their office, and they come to their desk and the first question they ask is, "did you reboot your computer?" and most of the time their answer is, "No." Then the person reboots the machine and everything works fine.

2. Reboot the computer again.

If you rebooted the computer, and you still have a problem, reboot it again. This can be a seriously important step in solving a problem. Even though you already rebooted the computer, rebooting it again can either completely fix it, or confirm that you really have a problem. And if it suits your fancy, you can even reboot it again.

3. Surf the internet for a solution to your problem.

Unlike back in the early to mid 1900's, we have a huge database of knowledge available to us at any time of the day, any day of the week. If you do consult the internet for a solution to your problem, make sure that it is a trusted source. A good way to do this is to read comments on the solution. If they are good comments that say the solution works, it's probably a good thing to try. If the article has a lot of bad comments, you should probably go and try something else. If there are not more than 5 comments period, it's not something to try.

4. Ask a friend.

Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to ask people that may know the answer. People can share knowledge with each other quite quickly over the internet, but it's best to ask face-to-face. Hackers can get ahold of email accounts and send you false information. If you don't meet in person, don't trust any suggestions over email or instant messaging.

(IT is your tech department)

5. The last resort.

If a reboot has been done twice, the internet has been surfed, and people that might know don't have any answers, then it's time to consult your IT office. Dependence on IT can make a person seem like they don't know what they're doing, and are unqualified to be working with computers, so don't use this solution unless it's absolutely necessary.

Avoiding Problems.

The best way to solve a technology problem is to avoid it entirely. Always save your work every minute to avoid loss of work. Don't just unplug your computer, shut it down correctly (even i'm guilty of this). If you are on a windows machine, it's a good idea to go through all of your programs and delete any that you don't remember installing. Just be careful, because if you delete something that was installed with Windows and is necessary for the machine's operation, something could go wrong. Things to leave are network and graphics drivers, and most things that are distributed by Microsoft. Do this every time you download anything from the internet! It's even a good idea to add checking installed programs to your everyday routine.

If you are downloading a program, make sure the website you are getting it from is the company's website. If you are downloading Java, only download it from java's website. Check the URL bar on the top of the screen to make sure. There have been times where someone has downloaded Java, and gotten a bunch of random, useless applications, and no Java.

Well, thank you! and if you have any tech related questions that you want answers to, just leave me a comment! I would be happy to research and write about it!
Goodbye for now!

Meru: A Sundance Movie Review-Emma

Meru

This award winning documentary is no ordinary climbing film. Meru follows the journey of three of the world’s best professional climbers as they attempt to climb the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru, the most technically complicated and dangerous peak in the Himilayas, which has never been scaled to completion. The audience learns about the personal struggles of each of the climbers: Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin (director), and Renan Ozturk. Each man battled the harsh weather and complex pasts.
I saw this documentary on the last day of Sundance, February 1st, after it had been given the U.S. Documentary Audience Award, on the film’s very last showing. When the movie came to an end they brought director Jimmy Chin up to the stage. Everyone in the theater got to their feet in applause as he made his way to the front. I could tell that he was on the verge of tears as he thanked us.
“That still gets me every time,” he said.
He explained that his journey as a climber and cinematographer throughout the creation of this film was full of problems that were clear after viewing the movie. Chin told us in the audience that he doesn’t want us to tell people that we saw a ‘climbing movie’ because it wasn’t just a climbing movie. I agree, Meru isn’t a climbing documentary. It is a documentary of an incredible journey to success.

Half time Show

Katy Perry was the headliner performer at this years Super Bowl last Sunday. This years Super Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona did not disappoint anyone watching for the half time show. Katy Perry was able to blow everyone away with her songs, everything from California Girls to Firework.

The show included pyrotechnics, dancing sharks, and a weird mirror lion that Katy made her appearance on. She was also joined by Missy Elliott, a veteran rapper in the performance. Like all Katy Perry performances, she also partook in multiple quick costume changes, including a beach themed dress and one with flames on it.

Pepsi, the half time sponsor also made sure they were not forgotten by featuring their logo throughout the thirteen minutes of half time. Overall, it was a very good show and was a highlight of the super bowl this year.

What not to do During Sundance

Sundance is the most hectic, busy, and frustrating two weeks of every year in Park City, so instead of contributing to the craziness, here are a few tips to avoiding this years chaos.

Do not drive down Main Street if it can be helped. There is an eternal traffic jam on Main Street during Sundance and it takes way to long to get anywhere that way, walking or taking the bus is the best bet for getting to the attractions and films on Main Street.

Walkers should also be aware that there are other people trying to get to other places and stopping and standing in the middle of the road and not moving tends to annoy everyone. The sidewalks are not wide and walking in the road is dangerous, so just get out of the way when stopping.

One of the most common horrors witnessed during Sundance is women wearing high heels. Then because of the inappropriate shoe choice, they end up falling like bowling pins. Moral of the story, never wear high heels when it is icy.

It is also just good to be nice to the volunteers, who do not want to deal with rude or whinny film goes. It is important to treat them respectively.

For a better experience, avoid all of the above.

The Puppy Bowl 2015

For those that don’t know what the Puppy Bowl is, it is basically a super bowl played by puppies. It is shown at 3:00 on the day of the Super Bowl game (this year the teams New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are playing each other) and consists of puppies tackling and “playing football” with each other. It is hosted by the Animal Planet television channel and this year will be its 11th anniversary.

“It’s something the whole family can tune into,” says Dan Schachner, the referee of the games. The two playing teams will be Team Fluff, and Team Ruff. All the dogs have come from rescue groups, shelters, and most become adopted after this event. How does the scoring work? A touchdown is made when a puppy drags a stuffed football into the end zone. It takes many months of preparing, recording, and editing.

Do the puppies have a halftime show? Yes, yes they do. At halftime cats will “perform” a Katy Perry song. These cats are also up for adoption. Are their cheerleaders for the puppies? Yes, there will be cheerleaders, and the cheerleaders are goats.

Another puppy tradition, is the puppy super bowl prediction. This event is where two cakes shaped as footballs are placed in the middle of the room. They have the names and colors of each of the teams who are playing in the Super Bowl that year. The puppies are hidden behind a curtain, and then the curtain is released. Which ever cake the puppies go to and eat, is the prediction of who will win the Super Bowl.

This year the puppies first ran to the Patriots cake, sniffed it for a while, and three of the puppies ran over to Seattle. By the end, they were all eating the Seattle cake, so the Seahawks are the predictions from the puppies.

The Super Bowl is quite a big deal every year in America. Over 111.5 million people watch it every year. Pizza sales are at high for the night and everyone is rushing to the parties. The two teams that went head to head at Super Bowl XLIX were the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. The game draws some, the halftime show draws others, and the commercials are a bonus. The commercials for the Super Bowl are known to be very funny and this year they were not the best.
The commercials this year were not known to be too funny. Time website rated all the commercials with a letter grade. Majority were C and Ds. The ones that got As were for Snickers, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Dove Men, McDonalds, Microsoft, Toyota, Clash of Clans, Dodge, and Loctite. Many of these were touching rather then funny this year. The McDonalds one was about people doing kind things instead of paying for food. The Coca-Cola one was about Coke spreading happiness on accident and making people feel better. The Dove Men was about dads loving their kids. Microsoft was about their company creating prosthetics for a little boy so he could walk. There were so many more like this which was good but the funny ones to most are the best. In years past there has not been so many touching ones and this year that was the majority of the commercials.
The funny commercials keep you watching the TV instead of going to the bathroom and that did not happen this year. Some of the favorites from last year were the Doritos, Audi, and Cheerios commercials and all of these were geared towards funny, not touching. Overall the commercials were cute but not too entertaining. Hopefully next years Superbowl will bring more laughter.

Can Soda Age You as Much as Smoking?

Soda -- that carbonated, sugary, and aging drink that we all love. A recent study  that was issued in the American Journal of Public Health states that and excessive amount of soda can “age your immune cells up to two years”.

Other than aging, soda can cause multiple body changes, illnesses, and in some cases, death. One body change is fat in odd places; fat surrounding your liver and muscles. Scientists did a study and monitored big soda drinkers for ten years, and found that their waste size increased 70% and over. They compared it to non soda drinkers. Studies also show that the caramel coloring (they put in drinks like Pepsi and Coke) cause cancer in animals.

Soda can also cause diabetes, heart attacks, and death. “Every 1 in 100 deaths are caused by sugary drinks. An overdose in sugar is one way it can cause a heart attack, and cause death.”

Is the Soda Stream any healthier than regular soda? The difference between Soda Stream products and Cola products is that Soda Stream uses real sugar, while Cola uses high-fructose corn syrup. A glass of SodaStream is 35 calories, when the same size glass of Cola is 100 calories.

In an interview with 15 students, one said they don’t drink soda, four said they drink about one bottle a week, five said they drink about two bottles a week, four said they drink about three bottles a week, and one said they drink about four bottles a week. Four bottles of soda is around 156g of sugar.

Technology 101, Week 3

If you asked a normal person, "How does the internet work?" most often, the reply would be: "You type in an address and the webpage comes up." I wish it was that simple, because really, a lot more is going on under the surface. This brings me to Technology 101, Week 3: Internet basics.

Most of today's kids think they are technologically savvy. If you think of it as being able to check Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat, then they are right. What I am referring to, however, is knowing the basics of how the internet works. Not how to search, but what goes on when a google search is executed. Not what a website is on a client-side view, but what makes that website work. I have probably already lost you with my technology gibberish, and I am going to put it all into laymen's terms.

What Happens when you Search Something on Google:

A Google search isn't as simple as type in what you want to search, and it brings up results. Many things have to happen before that. At any given point in time, Google releases "web spiders" that crawl around the web and gather information from a given website. Those "spiders" follow any links from that website, and gather information from those links. This process is repeated, and these information gathering web bugs create a database filled with websites and information for google.
When you search something, advanced computer sorting algorithms compare your search to the websites that are stored in it's database. If text on the website matches text in your search (as well as other factors like is it relevant, or is it visited often), the page comes up in your search browser.

Common Internet Networking Knowledge:

Most people think of an internet connection like this.
An internet diagram.

Actually, this is an internet connection, but not typically how it works. There is no wifi network you can connect to that is actually the internet. It has to go through a series of networking devices and other things that connect your computer to the internet. I don't have a diagram of our school's internet network setup, so I am going to give you a sample network setup. It is not modeled after any network in particular, although with the right tools, it is a liable network to be connected to.

Actually, an internet connection is like this.
As you can see, you are still connected to the internet, but there is a lot of other stuff in between. You have an Internet Service Provider (ISP), Firewall, Router, Switch, and Wireless Access Point (WAP). These things work together to bring you the internet. The ISP is the base of most networks, because that is what supplies internet to your whole setup. A firewall is basically a security point where viruses and unwanted things are prevented from accessing the network. It puts everything behind a password protected lock. The Router and Switch are devices that reroute and add devices onto the network, and the WAP is what the network is seen as. Laptops and computers connect wirelessly to it, and it provides network connection. This is a pretty basic setup, so let's get more complicated.

How a Proxy Server Works.

What we've done here is put a Proxy Server in between the ISP and the internet. Now if you ever wonder why most websites are blocked, here is the answer. The proxy acts like a firewall, where it takes information coming in and out, and records it. It also takes information and can deny it. So if you send a request to the internet and the proxy is set to deny it, you will get the "Website Blocked" page. So if you are angry that a website is blocked, the proxy is your problem.

VPN tunnels.

Now things are getting confusing. All I did was add a duplicate network to the internet, as well as a Virtual Private Network (VPN Tunnel). Now what a VPN tunnel does is allow many networks that are far away from each other to become one network. Now most likely, Ecker Hill does not have it's own ISP, and it would be to expensive to run a long networking cable from the district IT office. This would be expensive because Ecker is a few miles away from the IT office. The solution is to build a VPN tunnel through the internet that connects Ecker Hill's network to the central network. A better example would be to remove the ISP from one of the sides of the network. The VPN isn't required in this network because both sides have an Internet Service Provider. Another use of the VPN tunnel is if we attached a Local Area Network (LAN) storage drive to one of the switches, someone on the other side of the internet could connect to that LAN drive. Without a VPN network, nobody else can connect to that LAN drive except people on the same network or someone connected to it with a VPN.

How does Snapchat, Facebook, Etc. Work.

There are a few changes in this diagram. First, I divided the networks to make it a bit easier to understand. Second, there is now a LAN drive on network 2. Third, there are web servers for Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. If the computer on Network 1 wants to connect to Facebook, it will send a request by typing in www.facebook.com. This request will go through all of the network to the PCSD proxy. The request is compared to the rules stored in the Proxy server, and if it matches up with a request on the "Do Not Allow", the proxy takes the request and sends a packet (a bit of information) back to your computer. The request never reaches Facebook.

How do Chrome Proxy Addons Work?
Most likely, you have heard of a Proxy in the sense of an extension for chrome. Now in this example, I am going to use a fake extension name called "FunProxy". It is not real, so don't go look for it. What a proxy extension does is encrypt all of the data coming from your computer. The concept of data encryption is just an extra security measure. The PCSD proxy also acts like a device called a Packet Sniffer. A Packet Sniffer will copy any packets that travel to a certain location so someone can read them. Encryption makes it illegible and unable to be decoded by the human eye. An encrypted packet that goes through the PCSD proxy cannot be read, and "Sneaks" past it to bring you whatever website you want. The browsing speed drops because of the time it takes to encrypt a packet, but nobody can read what you are sending to a website.

HTTP vs. HTTPS.

Enough with the diagrams, I don't need one to explain this concept to you. HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is one of the many protocols used to bring you websites. HTTP is a tiny bit faster than HTTPS for a reason explained in the last diagram. HTTP is not encrypted, so any data sent through a HTTP transfer can be examined by anyone. HTTPS stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. Google, Facebook, and most websites where you can have your own accounts will use HTTPS because passwords sent to google will be encrypted, keeping your account secure. If you go on to google, look up in the top-left corner of the screen, and find that it is not https://google.com, you should not login. It is probably a good idea to check this on any website with an account login. It's actually a good idea in general to check the web address regularly on any website you visit to make sure that nobody is trying to scam you.

Well, thank you! and if you have any tech related questions that you want answers to, just leave me a comment! I would be happy to research and write about it!
Goodbye for now!
