The Puppy Bowl 2015

For those that don’t know what the Puppy Bowl is, it is basically a super bowl played by puppies. It is shown at 3:00 on the day of the Super Bowl game (this year the teams New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are playing each other) and consists of puppies tackling and “playing football” with each other. It is hosted by the Animal Planet television channel and this year will be its 11th anniversary.

“It’s something the whole family can tune into,” says Dan Schachner, the referee of the games. The two playing teams will be Team Fluff, and Team Ruff. All the dogs have come from rescue groups, shelters, and most become adopted after this event. How does the scoring work? A touchdown is made when a puppy drags a stuffed football into the end zone. It takes many months of preparing, recording, and editing.

Do the puppies have a halftime show? Yes, yes they do. At halftime cats will “perform” a Katy Perry song. These cats are also up for adoption. Are their cheerleaders for the puppies? Yes, there will be cheerleaders, and the cheerleaders are goats.

Another puppy tradition, is the puppy super bowl prediction. This event is where two cakes shaped as footballs are placed in the middle of the room. They have the names and colors of each of the teams who are playing in the Super Bowl that year. The puppies are hidden behind a curtain, and then the curtain is released. Which ever cake the puppies go to and eat, is the prediction of who will win the Super Bowl.

This year the puppies first ran to the Patriots cake, sniffed it for a while, and three of the puppies ran over to Seattle. By the end, they were all eating the Seattle cake, so the Seahawks are the predictions from the puppies.
