Park City is famous for it’s alpine skiing and beautiful resorts, but did you know that it has amazing nordic skiing opportunities as well? With close to over one hundred kilometers of skate and classic tracks winding around Park City and the surrounding area there are plenty of options to chose from. Are you looking for a fast, easy track to learn on, or a course to spool your olympic dreams? One of the best parts about nordic skiing in Park City as a local is the killer ski programs through the Utah Olympic Park… The Park City Nordic Ski Team has appeal for every age, a variety of sports and lots of fun.
Programs: Wether you are a seven year old pro, or seventy year old novice, the nordic program has you covered. The Kickers and Gliders (7-10 year olds,) Devo (10-12,) the Devo Plus (13-14) and The PCNSC comp team (14-18) programs offer skate and classic nordic skiing one through three days a week. There are also many ski jumping and adult programs.
What We Do: What is a normal practice like in the winter? Practices are normally 4:00-5:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays along with optional races on most weekends. Practices alternate between classic and skate, usually with more emphasis on skate. Practices are always fun but challenging. We work on different techniques, endurance drills and speed for most of practice. At the end we normally have time to squeeze in the skiing equivalent of sharks and minnows which is always super fun.
What about the summer and off-seasons? Dry land training is the best. The most common practices contain roller skiing, weight training, running and mountain biking with a fun, optional activity at the end like swimming, playing capture the flag, or rock climbing. Having the Utah Olympic Park as home base, there are plenty of fun options. After weight training we have ridden the alpine slide down, navigated the NINJA course after a time trial and taken advantage of the rare June snowstorms for snowball fights.
Where We Practice: We practice all over Park City, but usually White Pine Nordic Center, Utah Olympic Park, and Round Valley. Citizen Series races are everywhere from Soldier Hollow to Mountain Dell. The main big races the team goes to are in West Yellowstone Montana ,Jackson Wyoming and Sun Valley Idaho.
Rumors and Exciting Events for the up coming season: Robert Lazzaroni, a French skier and Olympic Park Nordic Manager, might be able to work out a trade with our sister city in France. PCNSC members might have the opportunity to live in France and train for a week. There are also rumors that one of the amazing biathlon camps in Oregon might come to Park City this coming summer. On a more reliable note Fast and Female night is Sunday, where skiers can meet women Olympians. The West Yellowstone Ski Festival is over Thanksgiving Break and is a huge hit for PCNSC members.
Why Join? The real question is: why not?! There is no better way to stay in shape during the winter than having fun with friends in the snow.
