Kimball Art Center Update: To Renovate or Not To Renovate? - Emma and Sam

On Wednesday, April 8th, 2015, the Park City Planning Commission met at City Hall. They held a panel so they could cast a vote that could possibly put a stop to the plans to renovate the Kimball Art Center. The vote ended four to one, with Preston Campbell being the only member to vote go-ahead to the renovations.

“The Kimball Art Center is my favorite place to go on Main Street. I really hope the building is renovated; it would be really cool. I like the building now, but it needs more space. The interior is laid out really weirdly, too. Even though it wouldn’t fit in with the rest of the buildings on Main Street, I still hope they renovate it because I think it has a lot of potential to be an amazing building as well as an amazing open art studio and gallery,” said Victoria Olson, an extremely artistic and talented student at Treasure Mountain Junior High.

The most recent blueprint shows the building growing from 32 feet tall to 45 feet tall. It would block views from the other historical buildings surrounding it, including the Sky Lodge. The change would mess with the aesthetic of Historical Main Street.

“I like it fine; it’s a good building,” said Evan Moulton on the possible renovation of Kimball Art Center. He’s not the only one who sees no need for a change.

Jim Tedford, founder of a group called Preserve Historic Main Street, is “adamantly opposed” to the proposal, calling it a “terrible precedent.”

Whether one is opposed or for the renovation of the KAC, we can all agree that it is a vital piece of Park City’s history and town.
