“Is Hollywood racist?”
Chris Rock asked the audience this exact question on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the 88th Oscars were hosted at the Dolby Theatre Hollywood, in Los Angeles, California. The question got awkward chuckles from the audience as they awaited the answer.
Later in the speech, Rock answers himself with “That’s right. Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right Hollywood is racist. But it ain’t that racist that you’ve grown accustomed to. Hollywood is sorority racist.”
The audience chuckles again, and Rock moves on. Other notable quotes from the monologue: "We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer" in the 1960s.” and "This year, in the In Memoriam package, it's just going to be black people that were shot by the cops on the way to the movies."
The opening monologue at this year’s oscars was full of questionably honest quotes, but the reaction was positive. Majority celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres tweeted their approval. Meanwhile, activist DeRay McKesson tweeted "There are still 'real things to protest,' @chrisrock. Like, police violence. And the #FlintWaterCrisis.”
What is your opinion on the opening monologue? Was it too honest? Or what the industry needed?
