McDonalds Drop Chicken with Antibiotics

With chickens, as well as many other types of mass produced livestock, live in very poor conditions before they are sent to a store or restaurant. Since they are packed extremely close together, they must be given plenty of antibiotics to prevent the spread of disease. McDonalds saying that they will no longer buy chickens who have had such poor lives in dark cramped spaces. The fact that the biggest fast food restaurant is starting to do that makes it more likely that it will catch on.

McDonalds is taking such a big step because its competition is gaining customer loyalty and higher sales. Many people are worried that the antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness in human immune systems. The company sales went down 1.8% just last January. A human tooth being found in a container of fries in Japan did not seem to have helped their stocks either.

No fat chocolate milk and low fat milk will come from cows that have not been treated with rbST, an artificial growth hormone, that is currently used in McDonalds cows. Even though there is no evidence to suggest that the hormone in the milk is affecting humans, the company says that since it is important to customers they will be taking the hormone off of the menu. The international corporation seems to hope that changing some of their long standing regulations will help them stay at number one.
